For twenty-one years, I genuinely believed that my wife Evelyn had simply chosen another man over our three newborn daughters. She abandoned us when Chloe, Abigail, and Harper were barely a week old, leaving behind a short note under a refrigerator magnet stating that a man named Brandon made her feel alive and assuring me that I would manage somehow. Left completely alone with three tiny babies and three cribs, I somehow managed every single day. I learned to braid hair before sunrise, sewed school play costumes poorly, packed lunches every morning, and attended every mother-daughter breakfast and parent-teacher conference alone. Evelyn never called on Christmas mornings or birthdays, remaining completely silent when Harper broke her arm at age eleven, when Abigail won a major academic scholarship, and when Chloe graduated at the top of her high school class. Nothing ever came from her until a courier van pulled up during our backyard celebration on the girls’ twenty-first birthday. The driver delivered three navy blue velvet boxes tied with silver ribbons, along with a thick envelope marked for me to read first. Recognizing Evelyn’s handwriting immediately, my daughters reacted with shock, and Abigail demanded that we throw the packages directly into the trash.
