Son Invited Mom to Meet His Live-in Girlfriend – What She Found in Their Fridge Shocked Her, but the Girlfriend’s Reply Was Worse

I thought my son’s girlfriend was joking when she casually announced that he had to pay her for every meal she prepared. But then Ethan reached into a kitchen drawer and pulled out a folded piece of paper. The moment she saw it, her smile disappeared.

“Don’t you dare show her that!” she shouted.

I’d never heard her sound so frightened before. And as I watched my son unfold that paper, I realized there was something happening in their relationship that I knew absolutely nothing about.

My son had been living with his girlfriend for two months before he finally invited me over.

Naturally, I brought his favorite apple pie.

But when I opened their refrigerator, I was shocked by what I found: two eggs, half a carton of milk, and practically nothing else.

Vanessa, his girlfriend, noticed my expression and smiled.

“His salary’s already gone. Until he can pay me per meal again, the kitchen’s closed!”

I stared at her, unsure whether she was joking.

Then Ethan opened a kitchen drawer and pulled out a folded sheet of paper.

“Don’t you dare show her that!” Vanessa suddenly shouted.

Her reaction told me immediately that whatever was written on that paper was something she desperately didn’t want me to see.

And I had no idea what my son was about to reveal.

The Visit That Started With an Uncomfortable Feeling

Ethan was 27 when he moved in with Vanessa.

He had a good job, paid his bills on time, and had always been careful with money. When he told me they were getting an apartment together, I congratulated him. Of course, I missed having him around, but I didn’t want to become one of those mothers who constantly appeared uninvited or questioned every decision her grown son made.

So I gave them space.

When Ethan finally called, however, his voice sounded unusually serious.

“Saturday at three, Mom. Can you come?”

“Of course. Should I bring anything?”

“Your apple pie?”

I laughed.

“You didn’t even have to ask!”

Their apartment was small but cheerful. There were flowers beside the window, matching cushions on the couch, and photographs of the happy couple displayed around the room.

Vanessa greeted me with a warm hug.

“It’s so nice to finally meet you, Helen!”

But something about Ethan’s greeting felt different.

He held on to me a little longer than usual.

“You okay, sweetheart?” I whispered.

“Yeah, Mom. I’m glad you’re here.”

But he didn’t look particularly glad.

He looked exhausted.

I tried not to read too much into it and carried the apple pie into the kitchen.

“Where should I put this?”

“The fridge,” Vanessa replied.

I opened the refrigerator door.

And stopped.

The shelves were almost completely empty.

“Have you two been too busy to go shopping?” I asked.

Vanessa laughed.

“Ethan’s paycheck is already gone.”

She then explained, almost casually, that she charged him for every meal she prepared.

Since he was behind on his payments, she had decided not to cook anything else until his next payday.

She glanced at the pie in my hands.

“At least he’ll have something to eat tonight.”

I slowly closed the refrigerator.

“You charge him for dinner?”

“Cooking is work. I’m not his personal chef.”

I understood that cooking required time and effort. Ethan was perfectly capable of preparing his own meals, and Vanessa certainly wasn’t obligated to serve him.

But something didn’t add up.

Why was my son apparently waiting for his next paycheck just to have enough food to eat?

Before I could ask another question, Ethan walked into the kitchen.

Vanessa smiled at him.

“I told your mother about your little payment problem.”

Ethan looked at her for several seconds.

Then he opened a drawer and removed a folded piece of paper.

“Actually, Mom, there’s something you should see.”

Vanessa’s expression changed immediately.

“Don’t you dare show her that.”

Ethan placed the paper on the table.

“You’re right. Someone else is joining us this afternoon.”

“Who?” Vanessa demanded.

Just then, the doorbell rang.

The Paper That Exposed Everything

Standing outside was a woman holding a container of homemade cookies.

“Hello! I’m Margaret. Vanessa’s mother.”

Vanessa immediately jumped out of her chair.

“Mom? What are you doing here?”

“Ethan invited me. He thought it was time our families finally met.”

Margaret seemed genuinely delighted to be there. But when she stepped inside and noticed the expressions around the kitchen table, her smile faded.

“Is something wrong?”

Ethan pulled out a chair.

“Please sit down.”

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“Our relationship is private.”

“I know,” Ethan replied. “I’ve tried discussing this privately.”

His hands were trembling.

“Today, I need everyone to hear the same thing.”

He unfolded the paper.

At the top, written neatly in handwriting, were two words:

MEALS OWED.

Beneath the heading was a detailed list of charges.

“Monday dinner — $15.”

“Tuesday breakfast — $8.”

“Tuesday dinner — $15.”

“Wednesday dinner — $15.”

The list continued, with some payments crossed out and new amounts added.

At the very bottom was the total:

TOTAL OUTSTANDING: $140.

Margaret frowned as she examined the document.

“Vanessa, what is this?”

“A record of what Ethan owes me.”

“For cooking?”

“Yes. And before you judge me, cooking takes time.”

Margaret nodded.

“Of course it does.”

Vanessa looked satisfied.

“Thank you.”

“But I don’t understand why your boyfriend has a bill.”

Ethan leaned forward and finally began explaining.

“When we first moved in together, Vanessa asked me to contribute something when she made special dinners. I agreed.”

“Which was fair,” Vanessa interrupted.

“I thought so too. But then she started charging me for everything. Breakfast, dinner, even leftovers.”

“Because you kept expecting me to cook!” Vanessa snapped.

“I offered to cook for myself.”

Vanessa’s jaw tightened.

Margaret looked down at the paper again.

“Ethan, who buys the ingredients?”

“I do.”

“All the groceries?”

“Yes.”

I felt an uncomfortable chill run through me.

“Who pays the rent?” I asked.

Ethan answered without hesitation.

“I do.”

Vanessa sighed.

“He earns more than me.”

“And what about electricity and the other household bills?” I continued.

“Me,” Ethan replied. “All of them.”
