I Thought a Young Man Was Helping My 83-Year-Old Neighbor – Until I Opened Her Bedroom Door

Sometimes she would leave a freshly baked slice of pie on my doorstep. Other times, I would help her carry the trash bin back from the curb or replace the batteries in her smoke detector.

She always thanked me as though I had just repaired her entire house.

So when a young man I had never seen before began visiting her every afternoon, I naturally assumed someone from her family had finally stepped in to help.

He usually arrived around three o’clock in a dark sedan that always looked freshly washed.

He introduced himself as Owen.

He appeared to be around 27, with a polite manner and a quiet, gentle voice. Whenever he visited, he carried either bags of groceries or a pharmacy shopping bag.

The first time we spoke, I was collecting my mail while he unloaded two paper bags from his trunk.

“You must be Ariel,” he said.

I paused.

“I am.”

“Marjorie’s mentioned you.”

He gave me an easy smile, the kind that made suspicion almost feel impolite.

“She said you keep an eye on the street.”

“Someone has to,” I replied playfully. “Are you family?”

His smile remained, although he shifted one of the bags against his hip.

“I’m helping her out for a while.”

Before I could ask what that meant, Marjorie opened her front door.

“Owen, those bags look heavy,” she called.

“I’ve got them,” he assured her.

She noticed me and waved, although her movement seemed smaller than usual.

Within a few weeks, the other neighbors had started referring to Owen as “the perfect grandson,” even though Marjorie had once told me she had never had children.

People seemed delighted to see him carrying her groceries, sweeping her porch, and bringing in her mail.

Mrs. Bell, who lived across the street, told me how reassuring it was to know someone was looking after Marjorie.

“Young people don’t usually make time for the elderly anymore,” she said. “That one was raised right.”

I wanted to agree.

I almost did.

Whenever I asked Marjorie about him, she simply smiled.

“He’s helping me with a few things.”

That should have been the end of the conversation.

She was an adult who had lived independently longer than I had been alive. I reminded myself that she didn’t owe me an explanation simply because we shared a fence and occasionally exchanged pie plates.

But gradually, small details began making me uncomfortable.

The Changes That Made Me Question Owen’s Visits

The first thing I noticed was the curtains.

Marjorie had always loved sunlight. She used to tell me that every house needed fresh air and brightness or it would eventually “start feeling sorry for itself.”

Yet suddenly, every curtain remained closed, even during the warmest afternoons.

Then she stopped sitting on her porch.

At first, I blamed the weather.

But as the days became cooler, her favorite chair remained empty.

Whenever I waved through the window, Owen would quietly pull the curtain shut.
