That single act of childhood compassion completely broke Dale down and served as the catalyst for an incredible transformation within both his business and our entire town. A few days later, he hired a crew to completely replace my oil stained driveway gravel, and he proudly drilled a hole in Noahs shiny penny to carry on his keychain as a daily reminder of the grace he received. Dale implemented sweeping changes at his automotive repair shop, finally offering comprehensive health insurance benefits to all of his hardworking employees to ensure their
families were protected. Together, we helped establish an annual community volunteering event called Penny Saturday at the local fire hall, where hundreds of residents now gather to roll spare change to fund a permanent lunch account program named in honor of Irene Bauer. When I recently visited his shop and saw a large donation jar on his counter designated for student lunches, I realized that his initial attempt at humiliation had completely failed. Instead of breaking my spirit with those greasy pennies, that massive pile of dirty metal healed a deeply wounded man and taught an entire community how one simple choice of kindness changes everything.
