Paige carried her bags inside as though she had been given permission. She sent the children upstairs and began walking through my apartment, opening doors and examining rooms.
Then she called our mother.
She put the call on speakerphone.
“We’re inside,” Paige said.
My mother’s voice came through the apartment’s connected speakers.
“Good. Once you’ve stayed there for a few weeks, Marissa won’t have the nerve to throw the children out.”
I felt something cold settle in my stomach.
This wasn’t an impulsive decision.
They had discussed it.
They had planned it.
And they were counting on the children to make it emotionally difficult for me to remove Paige from my home.
Then my father joined the conversation.
He had apparently already spoken to someone about residency rules and notice requirements.
They believed that if Paige remained in the penthouse long enough, she might gain protections that would make removing her far more complicated.
They had turned my own generosity into part of their strategy.
I could have called Paige immediately.
I could have screamed at my parents.
Instead, I kept watching.
Because I wanted to know exactly how far they intended to go.
Paige eventually walked toward the reinforced door leading to my private office.
She entered my birthday into the keypad.
Access denied.
She tried our mother’s birthday.
Denied again.
She frowned.
Ethan stood several feet behind her.
“Mom, maybe we shouldn’t—”
“Stay there,” Paige snapped.
She looked around and noticed the heavy metal fireplace tool resting beside the hearth.
She picked it up.
“Bring this over.”
Ethan hesitated.
He looked at the door, then at his mother.
“Mom…”
“Just bring it.”
Paige raised the metal tool herself.
The first strike hit the keypad.
The second dented the outer casing.
That was the moment everything changed.
A red warning appeared across my laptop screen.
PROTECTED WORKSPACE BREACH DETECTED. REMOTE SECURITY RESPONSE ACTIVATED.
I immediately contacted the operations center.
“This is federal law-enforcement officer Marissa Keane. I have an unauthorized entry at my residence. The intruder is my sister.”
The controller confirmed my identity.
Then the live camera feed appeared on another screen.
“Are children present?”
“Yes.”
“Understood.”
A response team was dispatched.
Back inside my penthouse, Paige had no idea what was happening.
The apartment suddenly went dark.
Every light switched off simultaneously.
Paige froze.
Then the televisions came alive.
The wall-mounted displays turned on.
The digital panels in the hallway illuminated.
Every screen showed the same message:
UNAUTHORIZED ENTRY DOCUMENTED. LAW ENFORCEMENT RESPONSE IN PROGRESS.
Paige stared at the television.
“What the hell?”
Then the recorded footage began playing.
She watched herself entering through the door.
She watched the warning appear.
She heard her own voice saying, “We live here now.”
Then the footage showed her striking the secured keypad.
Ethan stared at the screen.
Lily covered her ears.
Paige reached for her phone.
But before she could make a call, the private elevator chimed.
The doors began to open.
For the first time that night, the confident expression disappeared from Paige’s face.
The first person to step out was Officer Reyes, followed by another officer who had already been briefed that children were inside the residence.
Paige immediately started talking.
“This is a family misunderstanding.”
Officer Reyes didn’t argue.
He simply looked toward the damaged keypad.
Then toward the security cameras.
Then back at Paige.
“You entered using a temporary access code after being told you did not have permission to enter?”
Paige said nothing.
“And you damaged the secured door?”
Still nothing.
She finally looked at the television, where the recording continued playing.
